Leading from the Middle:
Influencing Up, Down, and Sideways
With Camille Catlett*
To achieve the goal of quality services and supports for each and every young child in Colorado, especially for those with unique learning and development needs, the creativity and commitment of every early childhood and early childhood special education colleague is essential.
Join us to learn more about the concept of leading from the middle and discover ways in which your individual and collective interactions with children, families, and colleagues can make the biggest difference on a daily basis. Such leaders include state, regional, and local directors and other administrators; early childhood coordinators; building principals; and assistant directors and coordinators.
Key to successfully implementing this leadership approach is working access to multiple “buckets” of evidence-based practice from which to draw in making evidence-based decisions. It also requires an appreciation for the multiple contexts in which young children learn and grow and the many ways in which effective leaders can access and share resources and ideas to enhance home, program, and community efforts to achieve quality services. Participants will gain access to and appreciation of forms of resources as well as opportunities to interact and apply new-found insights.
